Varsity Team Name Appliqué
Updated October 15, 2026
Arched team names are the signature of varsity jackets, spirit shirts and school banners. The arch layout bends a word the way a patch would, and the appliqué tool does it while keeping the satin border even.
Two arch styles
- Arch bends the whole word along a circle, so letters fan out and lean, the traditional look.
- Arch flat bends only the top and bottom edges while every letter side stays upright, like a woven patch.
Suggested settings
| Setting | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Text | A team name such as Tigers, Eagles or Warriors |
| Font | A sturdy slab or heavy sans: Bevan, Alfa Slab One, Anton |
| Layout | Arch flat for a clean patch look |
| Letter height | 1 in is about 5 in wide, 2 in about 9 in (fits a 6 by 10 in hoop); jacket backs use 3 to 4 in on a large hoop |
| Fabric type | Woven for wool, twill or cotton |
Tips for this project
- A curve of 30 to 50 looks natural; larger values bend more and need a wider hoop.
- Plural team names are long. If it does not fit, reduce the height or letter spacing a little.
- Felt or twill in school colors gives the authentic varsity feel.
