Large Initial Appliqué for a Jacket Back
Updated October 15, 2026
A single large initial on the back of a jacket is a bold, classic look. At 6 to 10 inches tall, one letter fills the back, and it needs the right size, fabric and stabilizer.
Suggested settings
| Setting | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Text | One letter, such as M or K |
| Font | A heavy slab such as Bevan or Alfa Slab One |
| Letter height | 6 to 8 in (the tool goes up to 10 in); an M is about 10 to 11 in wide at 8 in tall |
| Satin cover | 4 to 6 mm so the border matches the letter’s scale |
| Fabric type | Woven for wool, twill and canvas |
| Split satin stitches | Turn off for a satin cover wider than about 6 mm so stitches run straight across |
Tips
- Check the hoop: a 7 in letter needs a hoop with a large sewing field, or a design split across two hoopings.
- Heavy fabrics such as wool and leather need a strong needle and firm stabilizer.
- On very large designs, consider running the machine a little slower for neater stitches.
