Holiday Shirt Appliqué: Halloween, Christmas and More
Updated October 15, 2026
Holiday shirts are a great use for appliqué. A single festive word, in a fun font and a seasonal fabric, is quick to make and easy to sell or give. Here is how to choose the words, fonts and fabrics.
Ideas by holiday
| Holiday | Word ideas | Fabric ideas |
|---|---|---|
| Halloween | Boo, Spooky, Pumpkin, Ghoul | Orange, black, purple or glow fabric |
| Christmas | Merry, Jolly, Noel, Snowman | Red plaid, green, snowflake prints |
| Valentine’s Day | Love, XOXO, Hugs | Pink, red or heart prints |
| Easter | Hoppy, Bunny, Chick | Pastels and gingham |
| Thanksgiving | Grateful, Blessed, Gobble | Rust, mustard and plaid |
Fonts that suit holiday words
Fun display fonts such as Luckiest Guy and Chewy give a playful look, and bold rounded fonts such as Fredoka suit kids. Skip very thin or spooky, hairline fonts for appliqué; they do not hold up. See fonts for appliqué.
Tips
- Keep it to one short word: “Boo” is about 5 in wide and “Merry” about 9 in at 2 in tall, so both fit a 6 by 10 in hoop; at 1 in they are about 3 and 4.5 in.
- Pre-cut the fabric shapes for a batch of shirts, using the cut file with a cutting machine.
- Test the satin color against the fabric on a scrap, since patterned fabrics can clash.
