Football Mom Shirt Appliqué
Updated October 15, 2026
A “Football Mom” shirt is one of the most popular appliqué projects, and a good first one. Two short words in a bold font, stitched in team colors, read from across the field. Here is how to set it up so it sews cleanly.
Suggested settings
| Setting | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Text | Football Mom (or Baseball Mom, Soccer Mom, Cheer Mom) |
| Font | A heavy slab or block font such as Alfa Slab One |
| Letter height | 1 in is about 9.5 in wide for two words and fits a 6 by 10 in hoop; 2 in is about 19 in wide; see the size note below |
| Satin color | Your team’s main color |
| Fabric type | Stretch for a knit tee, Woven for a cotton sweatshirt |
| Tack-down | Zigzag on knits, running stitch on stable cotton |
How wide will it be?
Appliqué letters are big. “Football Mom” is about 9.5 inches wide at 1 inch tall, 19 inches at 2 inches and 29 at 3. At 1 inch it fits a 6 by 10 inch hoop (use a bold font and a 1.5 mm satin cover); the larger sizes suit a commercial machine or a large hoop. On a home hoop you can also use the shorter word: “Mom” is about 4 inches wide at 1 inch and 7 at 2. See the size guide for how to work out the width for any word.
Tips for this project
- Use team colors twice: one fabric for the letters and a satin color that matches or contrasts with it.
- The preview shows the exact width. Compare it with your hoop’s sewing field before you pay.
- A glitter or patterned fabric looks great, but back it with fusible web so it does not shift.
Fabric and stabilizer
Most mom shirts are knit tees, so use a cut-away stabilizer and the Stretch fabric type. See the fabric guide.
