Why embroidery fonts have a size range
Embroidery lettering is not a font that scales freely. Each stitch font is built for a size: too small and the letters fill in with thread and lose their shape, too big and the stitches get long enough to snag. The ranges above are the letter heights each font can actually produce.
What "letter height" means
Letter height here is the height of a capital letter, not the whole design. Tails, swashes and descenders add to the full height of the design, so a script font set to 20 mm letters can stitch taller than 20 mm.
Choosing a size
- For readable text on shirts and bags, 12 to 25 mm (about half an inch to an inch) is a common range.
- Thin, detailed fonts need the larger end of their range.
- Bold block fonts usually stay readable at the smaller end.
Questions
Where do these size limits come from?
They are the limits the ThreadType lettering designer applies to each font, so any height listed as a fit is one the designer will generate.
Can I use a font outside its range?
The designer will not generate a size outside the font's range, because the result would be a poor stitch-out. Pick a different font or a different height.
Do the sizes include the whole design?
No. They are capital letter heights. The full design can be taller than the letter height when a font has tails or swashes.
