Your own hoop (optional)
Use the sewing field from your machine's manual, which is smaller than the outside of the hoop.

How the fit is worked out
The calculator checks that the design plus your margin on every side is no bigger than the hoop's sewing field. If you allow turning, it also tries the design rotated 90°, which often lets a wide design fit a hoop that is taller than it is wide.
Why keep a margin?
Stitching right at the edge of the sewing field risks the needle bar or presser foot hitting the hoop, and the fabric near the edge is the least stable. A few millimetres of clear space is cheap insurance.
Hoop size and sewing field are not the same
The sizes in the table are typical hoop sizes. The area your machine can really stitch inside a hoop is smaller and depends on the machine, so enter your own sewing field above for an exact answer.
Questions
How much margin should I leave?
About 5 mm (a quarter of an inch) on every side is a sensible starting point. Leave more for thick fabrics or when you are not sure of your machine's true sewing field.
What if my design is a little too big?
Try turning it 90°, a bigger hoop, or making the design slightly smaller. Small size changes are usually fine, but large ones change how the stitches look. The resize calculator shows what to expect.
Where do I find my machine's sewing field?
In the manual or on the manufacturer's page for your hoop. It is listed as the embroidery area for each hoop size.
